Museum of Contemporary Photography

On the occasion of the eighth edition of Open Archives, an event organized by Rete Fotografia, the Museum of Contemporary Photography organizes visits guided in person by the educational service and the curator.

The visit will be an opportunity to learn about the Museum, its heritage and its exhibitions, with the opportunity to appreciate up close the original photographs of important Italian and foreign contemporary authors. In particular, it will focus on the theme “Preserving the Future” with a focus on the photographic “object”. We will start the journey from the Federico Patellani archive rearranged with the original furniture inside Villa Ghirlanda: we will discuss the different types of supports present in a personal archive, on conservation and usability. We will proceed in the Museum’s archive where it will be possible to deepen the specificity of contemporary photography with regard to the subject and technique of the supports, with particular attention to the different types of printing (Cibachrome, Polaroid, inkjet prints, chromogenic prints, gelatin silver bromide prints, lambda prints, pigment inkjet printing, cyanotypes, etc.) and the variety of possible montages (Face-mounting, Dibond, aluminum, poliplatt, forex, cardboard, passe-partout, frame, light box, etc.). It will be an opportunity to think about the conservation peculiarities of contemporary photography and the different materials and on the authorial choices.
Works by important artists such as Gabriele Basilico, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Mario Cresci, Paola De Pietri, Vittore Fossati, Luigi Ghirri, Paolo Gioli, Tommaso Mori, Federico Patellani, Thomas Struth, Luigi Veronesi, taken from the following photographic collections: Archivio dello spazio, Racconto del nostro presente, Abitare, Milano senza confine, Storie immaginate in luoghi reali, Osserva.Te.R., Raccolta antologica, Lanfranco Colombo, Gabriele Basilico/ Milan. Portraits of factories 1978-1980, Federico Patellani.
The visit will end in the Museum’s Specialized Library where it will be possible to dwell on some publications that touch on the topics covered by the Open Archives week and topics covered in the archive.
