URBAN LAYERS – RESIDENCY PROGRAM

EXHIBITIONS

GIBELLINA, APRIL 2016

The residency was held in Gibellina, a symbol for contemporary art, located in the heart of Sicily, in the geographic and symbolic centre of the Mediterranean, which today has turned from a place of encounter and dialogue among cultures to an impassable border and a place of humanitarian tragedies.

The artists were selected through an international call for research projects to be undertaken during the residency, which received 118 proposals from 31 different countries.

A committee, chaired by Roberta Valtorta and composed of the heads of the institutions involved – Luigi Spedicato, University of Salento; Vincenzo Fiammetta, Orestiadi Foundation; Matteo Balduzzi, Museum of Contemporary Photography; Antonella Montinaro, GACMA; Hercules Papaioannou, Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Andrea Laudisa, ICM/Positivo Diretto – selected the artists:

Federica Bardelli e Alex Piacentini (I)

Claudio Beorchia (I)

Angélica Dass (BR/E)

Simone Sapienza (I)

Zamir Suleymanov (AZ)

Stratis Vogiatzis (GR).

Orestiadi Foundation has hosted the six selected artists for about a month, from 1 to 27 April 2016.

The residency foresaw a continuous interaction with Matteo Balduzzi (curator, Museum of Contemporary Photography) and three meeting opportunities with 3 visiting professors: the artists Arno Gisinger (A), Caesar Pietroiusti (I) and the curator/producer of multimedia projects Bas Vroege (NL).
